On January 25, 2010 the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan met in Krasnaya Polyana" guest house in Sochi with the participation of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. After talks President Ilham Aliyev said that Azerbaijan accepts the updated Madrid principles proposed by the co-chairs with "certain exceptions". And Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov informed that Armenian president asked for two weeks to express his attitude to these proposals given in Sochi talks. However, the response to the proposals of the Armenian side delayed for months.
Finally, on June 17 of the same year the presidents met in trilateral format within the framework of the traditional international economic forum in St. Petersburg of Russia. Azerbaijani and Armenian Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan in conversation with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev expressed their readiness to continue the negotiations for the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict on the basis of the Madrid principles. The news has been spread that due to Armenia’s setback from the early agreed items the sides can not reach agreement on general principles of the settlement. Thus, Armenia does not accept an updated version of Madrid principles.
On June 26, 2010, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, U.S. President Barack Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy adopted a statement on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in Canada, at the "Big Eight" Summit.
